PADI Deep Speciality or Tec 40

A question sometimes asked is what's the difference between the PADI Deep Speciality or Tec 40 and do I need to have the Deep Speciality before I do Tec 40.

You do NOT need to have the PADI Deep Speciality in order to book onto the PADI Tec 40 course.  There are of course other pre-requisites if you don't have it though.

While both courses allow you to progress down to 40 metres, they do it in different ways as can be seen in their course goals.

Course Goals

Deep Speciality

Develop your practical knowledge of deep diving

Increase your diving skills

Plan, organise and make deep dives

Improve your diving ability and provide you with additional supervised experience

Encourage you to participate in other speciality training

Tec 40

To qualify you to make limited decompression dives at a level that bridges recreational and technical diving

To train you in the knowledge, procedures and motor skills required for decompression diving within the limits of the Tec 40 certification

To assure you understand and acknowledge the hazards and risks associated with this level of Tec diving and Tec diving in general

To train you to prepare for and respond to reasonably foreseeable emergencies that may occur within Tec 40 limits

To lay the foundation for continuing your training as a full techical diver in the Tec 45 and Tec 50 courses

Equipment considerations

For the Deep Speciality course you probably have all of the kit already with maybe a few small exceptions but the main one is an emergency air supply.  Typically you would see this as a 3 litre pony cylinder fastened to the divers main cylinder.  Personally we do not believe this is an adequate emergency air supply and that if you are going to 40 metres you should understand what is acceptable as one.

For Tec 40, you can complete it in standard recreational equipment albeit with a few enhancements so you don't have to rush out and buy a lot of new equipment although it would be better completing it in the standard technical rig.  You would also be carrying a proper decompression cylinder and your primary cylinder and emergency cylinder would be sized appropriately.

Thoughts on the courses

The Deep speciality course is aimed more at those who simply want to experience that bit of extra depth and get the basic knowledge required to do so without having to learn a lot of new skills.

The Tec 40 course introduces a lot of new skills and improves your existing skills considerably ending up with a much safer and more capable diver within recreational depth limits.  Unlike the Deep speciality course which does basic gas planning, it also goes into considerable depth on proper gas planning and oxygen exposure.
